POST 1:

As described in your Social Psychology textbook reading from Study 1, psychology professor David Buss proposed a controversial evolutionary perspective to describe the process of mate selection. Critically analyze this evolutionary perspective. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of this theory as it relates to understanding human mate selection.

The evolutionary perspective offers social psychologists an important and provocative perspective on relationships (Kassin,2017). The evolutionary perspective proposed by David Buss does have some empirical support. As reported in the text, Kassin (2017) David Buss conducted a study that found, men were more likely to prefer good looks, and women were more likely to prefer good financial prospects, but both sexes saw other characteristics—such as being funny, dependable, and kind—as more important. Intimate relationships often involve three basic components: (1) feelings of attachment, affection, and love; (2) fulfillment of psychological needs; and (3) interdependence between partners, each of whom has a meaningful influence on the other (Kassin, 2017). This falls in line with attachment theory. Attachment theory provides a developmental psychopathology approach, in which normal and abnormal development can be understood together. Attachment theory was initially developed to further explain the emotional attachment of infants and children. Some research suggests that healthy or maladaptive attachments can continue to develop throughout an individual’s lifetime, and an emphasis on attachment in adults has been prominent in the past 2 decades (Connors, 2011). Bowlby’s observations led not only to his belief that the child’s relationship with the mother is important for later functioning, but also to a belief that this relationship is of critical immediate importance to the child. Bowlby, along with his colleague James Robertson, observed that children experienced intense distress when separated from their mothers, even if they were fed and cared for by others (Cassidy & Shaver, 2016).

In conclusion, attachment theory needs further research however it may be inferred that the evolutionary perspective shows that the feeling of attachment could impact future social norms and mate selection. From an evolutionary perspective, attachment theory does not explain why those who have been adopted into non-biological streams do well with romantic relationships and mate selection. The finding by Bowdly and Robertson explain abandonment feelings and possible separation anxiety.

POST 2:

According to David Buss mate selection, follows the ideology of sex differences in human selection. Woman and men share differences when it comes to selecting a mate, because of the uncertainties that are biologically apparent (Kassin, 2017). Woman are selective because of reproductive reasons, and challenges that are associated with survival of reproduction. Men are selective due to the challenges that they are faced with due to paternity challenges, genes, and faithfulness (Buss &Barnes, 1986). For example, applying David Buss’s theory a woman will select a mate who can provide financially, and give her protection. A man will choose a woman who is faithful, fertile, and a youthful appearance. Men by nature are not limited to a number of children that they can reproduce, so they attempt to select mates who can carry their genes. Men focus on the woman who appears to be faithful because they cannot guarantee that the offspring is genetically theirs. According to Buss, men, in general, emphasize a great deal on women who have youthful appearances because youth can be a sign of fertility. Woman generally seek a mate that’s older because increased age on a male can be linked to hierarchy in social status (Buss & Barnes, 1986).

A weakness of this theory could be that relationships vary from person to person, therefore there are many extraneous variables that could contradict this theory. Such as homosexuality, biologically two same gender individuals cannot reproduce, social status, fertility, and or appearance would not make a difference because biologically it is not possible (Kassin, 2017). Another weakness is that Buss’s theory could promote stereotypes in gender roles, for example, “women are only attracted to older men who can be a provider to them and their offspring”, or “men are only attracted to women who have a youthful appearance” even though each example may apply to some mate selection it does not apply to all. To the contrary, a man may want to reproduce with a woman who may be older and has social status (Conroy-Beam & Buss, 2016). A strength to this theory is that Buss ‘s theory did give an explanation to mate selection. I feel as if this theory was a means of explaining a pattern in how some individuals employ strategies to reproduce.
