The social network is widely used everywhere. People can share several data and information through social media sites. This is a robust tool for sharing discussions, research activities, data, etc. but several ethical issues also come under social networking sites, including:

  • Privacy – privacy attack is a big risk associated with social media. Several unauthorized users make an effort to access the confidential data and information. This will be very harmful to his professional and personal credibility.
  • Consent, when groups of people and individuals are sharing information on social media, then it is not described sometimes that who access their data and information without any agreement. So, this is also a big issue of social media.
  • Data storage – In today’s situation, many people reflect that social media is a safe and secure place to store their confidential data and information. However, this be determined by the site of the storage servers, that local management can access their confidential data through the law. So, these are several ethical issues of the social network.

Now we determine about accessibility. Through network and social media, an individual is available and accessible anywhere or anytime. Anybody can send him video and photo also can share required data and information. One can communicate or talk to another individual anytime anywhere once he is online. So through the network and social media, the unit of accessibility is extremely increased (Efraim Turban, 2008).

Even though social media sites such as Facebook, Google, and Twitter have gained a huge number of users they are known to publish information spontaneously and as soon as they happen or in some cases even as they happen. Since many users do not have awareness of what happens they are likely to get targeted since they can be found online or be searched in the profile pages that contain personal information (Kizza, 2010). Through the sites, a person can search the place where the person is located and even get their phone numbers. The fact that most social media sites can be used on cell phones sometimes mean that there is proliferation of information through the various sites that are visited using the devices. An ethical issue that is of most concern involves privacy. Since the internet contains a lot of data, there has been serious allegations in regards to privacy where users cannot maintain the privacy and information can always be found only by a person who is actively looking for them (Light, & McGrath, 2010). A factor that has caused the issue of privacy includes the increasing number of youth who join the network sites with little or no concern for their privacy. The concept of free speech has also been abused as people sometimes push adjectives that may not be beneficial for the human race.

Four primary factors described that set the state for Web 2.0 or the social Web that we enjoy today include Broad Bandwidth (broadband), New web programming technologies, Application programming interfaces (API) and Sustainable business models (Parrish, 2010). The role of an application-programming interface is to transfer information from one web application to another. This helps to facilitate communication between the various devices and sites that are mostly used by people in particular social media sites. Broad bandwidth has facilitated is a use of internet as it is very fast and can reach a wide variety of people.
