Discussion

As a pre-service teacher it is important to explore your social identity as it relates to the larger society. Through reflection and self-awareness you can then begin to empathize with your students, who may be ethnically and culturally different.

In this discussion forum please examine the formation of your own ethnic identity in light of the ideas presented in Phinney and Ong (2007), Conceptualization and Measurement of Ethnic Identity: Current Status and Future Directions. Discuss with your peers one new aspect you learned about yourself. How does this new information inform your teaching?

In addition, you are welcome to complete the Understanding Our Social Identities form to discuss with your coursemates. Please share only what you feel comfortable disclosing.
