1. How did the Surrealist works in the program reflect Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis and the unconscious or subconscious mind?

2. Aboriginal artists have said that the true value of their work lies in the personal experience of “dreaming,” and not in the resultant visual images that are created. How is this view similar or different to non- Aboriginal artists who have represented their dreams in works of art?

1. Throughout history, many artists represented people and things in the world around them. The work of other artists is an expression of the inner self. Explain how Sandy Skoglund uses objects from the real world in her work, and what she is trying to convey.

Sandy Skoglund to me, uses objects from the real world in her work to make her art seem more ‘different’ than others. I think she’s trying to send this message of art is free, art can be anything we want it to be and however we see/perceive it as. In the video she talks about art and tying it to the imaginary life. I feel like she is trying to get this message across about art and how the key of “escaping” reality is to imagine it. She also mentions its a way of just being humans, because everyone imagines their own imaginary ideas in their everyday lives. It is also as if she is using a metaphor in how the key to art or a way to have success is by having us imagine it, like seeing is believing. In the video she says “..to me, the very healing things about making art, is that it allows you to transform yourself.” meaning you are able to express yourself in a comfortable way you would want it to be. Allowing yourself to imagine things is another way you can ‘transform’ or express yourself. She even also states in the video that it would seem she is celebrating the ordinariness of life with common things she uses from the world. In all I believe she sets a message of allowing ourselves to be able to imagine and by imagining it can help transform/express ourselves better than words.
