Prompt for the reflection:

The film, The Greatest Good, was derived from the words of Gifford Pinchot, the man behind the creation of the Forest Service. He believed in “the greatest good for the greatest number of people for the longest time”.

What does this mean in light of the fact that according to this story about the Forest Service there were no women, American Indians, African Americans or any other people of color engaged in the official process of creating and maintaining the Forest Service? And what about the working class?

In addition, how does this story about the creation of the Forest Service fit with the collective American Indian experience occurring during the same period (late 1800’s to mid-1900’s)?

Based on what you have learned to date, how might the story about the Forest Service be different if you were telling it?
