who good biology lab

This week you will complete Module 02; a virtual laboratory entitled, “The Transgenic Fly.” The purpose of the lab is to familiarize you with the science and techniques used to make transgenic flies. Transgenic organisms, which contain DNA that is inserted experimentally, are used to study many biological processes. In this lab, you will create a transgenic fly to study circadian rhythms. The fly glows only when a certain gene involved in circadian rhythms is activated. After making the glowing fly, you will use it to explore basic principles of circadian biology and genetics.

The introduction of this laboratory includes the basic steps and learning objectives of this particular laboratory.

After reviewing the introduction, you are to complete a 3 FULL paragraph pre-lab analysis (I will not be as lenient as I was for Module 01).  The pre-lab analysis should include: background information on the transgenic fly, materials and methods covered in the introduction, any other prior knowledge you had relating to this experiment, and other useful information relating to the transgenic fly and/or organisms.  The pre-lab analysis is to be submitted as a discussion.

Once you’ve submitted the pre-analysis, you are to complete the lab experiment.  Enter the virtual with your mouse cursor and follow the directions.  Your progress will be monitored via the progress tab.  Once you’ve finished the laboratory experiment, please review the lab then take the Laboratory Exam (You will have 35 minutes to complete the exam).

This Week’s Checklist:

  1. Review Experiment Introduction
  2. Complete Pre-Lab Analysis
  3. Complete Laboratory Experiment
  4. Complete Laboratory Exam
