As we begin to explore personality theories within psychology, we start with psychoanalytic theories. Freud believed that there were three components to personality: Id, Ego, and Superego. He also developed the concept of defense mechanisms.

  • What do you see as the differences among the Id, the Ego, and the Superego? How do these components of personality relate to Freud’s concept of defense mechanisms? Recall a time when you used defense mechanisms. Was it helpful in dealing with a stressful event? Why or why not?

ID is the manifestation of an individual’s primal needs and desires. Should one’s inhibitions be thrown to the wind and action taken on purely selfish motivators their ID would be displayed prominently. Superego is essentially the opposite of the ID. Its purpose and function is to guide the individual within a set of moral guidelines. It would be the voice of reason that prevents people form acting on impulse only and provides restraint so that thoughtful decisions can be made before actions take place. Ego is the man in the middle so to speak. It is a moderator of sorts that creates a dialog between the other two in order to prevent them from cancelling one another out. The ego can be likened to a protocol that enables fulfillment without over indulgence. Defense mechanisms are the the gates between the three that basically keep the system in check. By doing so they prevent a runaway scenario that could cause the system to collapse and fail. Such failures would look like nervous breakdowns and delusions. I recall a time as a child when I accidentally killed my little duckling pet. I was total smitten with it and wanted it with me at all times. When I realized what I had done my defense mechanism was to deny it was dead and convince myself it was sleeping. The purpose of this was to prevent extreme emotional distress that my very young mind and heart could not bare. It did help me, but only for a brief time period. Quickly I had to admit to myself the reality of my situation and accept it.

Understanding the personality differs between culture and environmental factors, these factors help shape an individuals personality. For example American and Chinese, while one culture may focus on individualism another focuses on collective social harmony. Sigmund Freud believed in the in the conscious and unconscious, in an illustration figure 11.5 ( Collge, O. Psychology.) he explains how the human brain is only aware of small amounts of consciousness while the other areas remain in our unconsciousness. In Frued theory our personality is a split between biological and pleasure, these two “forces” as identified by Frued are not in balance and therefore causes our personalities to be unbalanced. He further explains these forces/ systems as “id” , “superego” and “ego”. In our unconscious “id” gives us desires/ wants , while in our conscious we are rational also known as “ego”. To help cope between the conflict of these systems we develop defense mechanisms which Freud describes as protective behaviors in our unconscious mind, they each help to reduce the emotions an individual might feel when faced with anxiety or uncertainty. I myself have used defense mechanisms when dealing with stressful events such as the death of my Grandmother, I chose to repress the memories of her going through hospice while battling lung cancer. For me it has been easier to remember her happy and healthy, rather than weak and helpless.
