In Viewpoints, “extraordinary listening” refers to a kind of disciplined perception in which the actor uses all of their sensory capabilities to cultivate an awareness which allows them to “see” past the limits of social and cultural expectation in order to facilitate authentic and creative (re)action.
Consider what listening means to you in your practice. What does it mean to listen to someone and opposed to simply hearing someone? What makes listening difficult for you? In what way do you imagine that deeply held cultural beliefs or assumptions may impact your ability to engage in extraordinary listening? In what way do you expect that practicing active listening will result in creating a more compelling scene with your partner? What other thoughts do you have about listening?
