Perform the Stroop experiment on two different people who are native speakers of English and two different people who are non-native speakers of English. 1.      Either print out the attached Stroop materials on a color printer (2 pages) or create

your own using colored markers. 2. Do the experiment with one person at a time. Instruct your “subject” to say out

loud the ink color in which the words are written as quickly as possible. 3. First show the subject the non-Stroop sheet (the one where the written words match the colors in which they are written). Use a stop watch to record how long it

takes the subject to read the list of words, and record the time. 4.  Then repeat Step 3 with the Stroop sheet (the one where the written words and the

colors in which they are written do not match). 5.     Repeat Steps 2-4 for each of your four subjects. 6. Prepare a two-page report of your Stroop study. It should contain the following

information: Subject 1: Native English speaker. [Male/Female?].

Non-Stroop Reading Time:

Stroop Reading Time: Subject 2: Native English speaker. [Male/Female?].

Non-Stroop Reading Time:

Stroop Reading Time: Subject 3: Native speaker of [language?], [number of years studying English?], [male/female?]

Non-Stroop Reading Time:

Stroop Reading Time: Subject 4: Native speaker of [language?], [number of years studying English?], [male/female?]

Non-Stroop Reading Time:

Stroop Reading Time: Discussion of Results: [Discuss your findings—did the Stroop or the Non-Stroop sheet take longer for subjects to read? Were there differences among subjects in overall reading times? Were different subjects affected differently by the Stroop task? Did the non-native speakers of English perform similarly to native English speakers on the task? Did their performance have anything to do with how long they have studied English? Speculate about reasons for why you found the patterns you did.]Introduction to the Study of Language (LING/ENGL 1200) Hayes-Harb
