how many bad parts are made each shift

My current position is a Quality Inspector for Sodecia. I currently work from 2:30 pm to 1 am every day. My schedule changes on me almost every three to four months. My job is to make sure that every part coming off the line is correct to the standards that our customers have them at. I have to pull a part off a welding operation every two hours to make sure it conforms enough to be buyable. I believe that the three main traits that apply to me are openness, extraversion, and agreeableness.

Openness

The definition of openness according to the graph above shows that having an open mind can greatly affect how you work. For example, just yesterday I got a text message from my boss showing I wrote something down wrong on one of the scrap report sheets we turn in every night. That sheet shows how many parts were bad and how many we had to through away. She had to tell me what I did wrong and what I had to write down every time. I had to get creative due to how many bad parts are made each shift. According to this article, (https://ac.els-cdn.com/S2212567116300958/1-s2.0-S2212567116300958-main.pdf?_tid=4004ca73-27ca-4e8d-b353-e3634e908467&acdnat=1532011473_9081e8935493050e8a66b52e774c2a82), this shows that openness in quality helps gain a better experience through positive reinforcement. Most of my job is not done in a positive environment, but I make due by remembering I have to get my schoolwork done in order to get to a better position.

Agreeableness

According to this article, (http://www.admissionstesting.org/images/419493-the-big-five-personality-traits-in-cpsq.pdf), the agreeableness trait is the quintessential “getting along with people” trait. Most of my co-workers are either not very bright or don’t speak any or all English. My job is to also get people on the same page, so-to-speak, in order to make sure the parts are good coming off the press line/welding operation. I have to make everyone agree with me due to my job being an inspector. My word is the only thing that can save me when a bunch of bad parts are made and none of the operators have told me what, when, or how it happened.

Extraversion

Most of the time I work in/on an area separate from the rest of the plant. My job is to go to where the products are getting made in my designated area and check them from time to time to make sure they are following the correct guidelines. Another part I have to do is to communicate with the supervisor, tool maker, operator, and press operator in order to make sure they are on the same page as everyone else when a part comes out bad. Then after all that discussion, we have to formulate a plan in order to correct the mistake and make it up to code for our customers.

RESPONSE 2 – Abraham Kassa – The Big 5 Traits and my profession

by Abraham Kassa –

In my current position I work for a tier one automotive supplier and I am responsible for Advanced Purchasing in the NAFTA territory. I work alongside our Commercial, Costing, Advanced Engineering and Industrial teams on new customer quotes to win new business for the organization. My job is to provide costs for purchased components that have been outlined on the customer bill of materials for a new project that we are trying to secure. As noted above, my position requires significant interaction with inside and outside resources. My outputs and inputs are intertwined with my colleagues’ responsibilities, so it requires a great deal of cooperation and personal responsibility amongst the team to achieve the common goal of winning future profitable business for the organization. Although all 5 dimensions certainly apply to my position in certain degrees, conscientiousness, extraversion and openness to experience seem to be most crucial to my position’s value. I touch on each specifically below.

Conscientiousness

As highlighted in Chapter 5 of our book, conscientiousness is an important factor of success within an organization for basically any kind of job or function (Robbins & Judge, 2019).There is no surprise that high expression of this trait is key to the success of my team and each individual within it. The success of a quote requires contributions from each member, with a high degree of confidence and within a certain time frame. This requires that I take responsibility for the inputs I am providing, I remain proactive in obtaining the necessary information needed to provide those inputs and I can be depended upon to provide my inputs on time.

Extraversion

My position requires me to be ready to tap into resources within and outside of the organization on a daily basis. Since I represent the purchasing department’s input on new business opportunities, I am required to be firm and confident about the information that I provide. There is often times an internal wrestling match that occurs between Commercial and Purchasing during a new quote. Commercial receives pressure from the customer to cut costs, which is passed on to purchasing. Purchasing must often defend pricing and provide current market data to make sure that program profitability is not negatively impacted in the effort to win new business. The push and pull requires members on both sides to exhibit various traits of extroversion until a middle ground is reached that satisfies the needs of the customer and our organization. Although the majority of the quote team require traits of extroversion to be successful, they may not necessarily be beneficial for members of the Costing team. Costing processes and transforms all inputs from the team into a customer specific quote format. Costing members need an environment that facilitates the focus and attention necessary to collect, analyze and transform data which would is more closely related to introversion (Israwi, 2013)

Openness to Experience

Since Advanced Purchasing is responsible for supporting new business quotes for the whole NAFTA territory, I work with all of our business units and a diverse group of customers. At my organization, each business unit has different processes for quoting new business. Additionally, each customer has different formats, requirements and processes. Basically, each quote is a new experience and has its own unique challenges. We are now faced with challenges presented by ever evolving tariffs, trade wars, and last-minute strategy changes by the OEMs. Therefore, a high degree of openness to experience is required because of the complexity, need for self-direction and novelty (Nieß & Zacher, 2015).

RESPONSE 3 – Michelle Liano Big Five Traits

by Michelle Liano –

Three of the Big Five Traits that I can best apply to my current position are emotional stability, openness, and conscientiousness. I work as an accountant at a private auto supplier in my local area and these have helped me thrive in my career.

Emotional Stability

Having emotional stability in any job is important. People with low emotional stability can be neurotic, may be unable to cope with changing demand, and may experience burnout. (Robbins & Judge, 2019, p. 148-149). I have had different projects given to me, on top of my existing work and I am expected to get the job done. I also work with a group of 15 people and there are always conflicts. I am able to adapt to the new projects and deal with the feedback of my co-workers without experiencing negative effects. Being emotionally stable at work and at home have a big impact on my overall quality of life.

Openness

As Orey (2014) mentions, openness is one of the key factors the contribute to career success. (p. 34) My level of openness has allowed me to adapt and be more flexible to my work conditions and job requirements. In the 5 years I have been at my company, I have had 3 different job titles, each a promotion that came with more responsibility. My ability to be open to these changes and adapt has been a big contributor to my success at this company. My team also looks to me for advice and direction because of my advancement and I believe that aids in my leadership skills.

Conscientiousness

My level of conscientiousness has lead me to learn and advance in my career, as Robbins & Judge (2019) stated, people with higher conscientiousness have more knowledge of their job and learn more leading to higher job performance. (p. 148) I started out at my current company as a low level employee. As I learned and gained experience, I was given more responsibility and was able to gain more knowledge and experience. I have the drive to learn and be an asset to my team and I have the discipline to stay focused on my work. I am able to do these things because I am organized and I show effort in my work every day. My managers have seen this and have rewarded me with promotions and pay increases. This flows into my school life as well and as Kertechian (2018) mentions, students with higher grades annually are the most conscientious and more intrinsically motived.
