What message is the artist trying to convey and how does the artist do that through the choices they made creating their artwork?
How does the artist use things like line, shape, color, form, patterns to evoke texture, movement, tone (feeling)? How does the artist use each of these elements to convey a message to the viewer. How does the positioning of certain lines, or repetition in shapes, maybe the choices made about highlighting an area to photograph, creates a mood or tells a bigger story.
Do not just tell me that the image has lines, color, and shape – that is how art is made – you need to critically think about the formal and contextual aspects of the artwork and make larger connections. Who was the artist? What period was this art created? Does it connect to a period, a style, something social, political, racial? Think about the bigger connections also.
There is a handout I have linked to the syllabus for Wednesday (LINE, COLOR, SPACE, LIGHT, AND SHAPE: WHAT DO THEY DO? WHAT DO THEY EVOKE? – elements information handout) Read the handout and use it to help you analyze your photograph. Also, make sure you read over the Getty Museum link from the previous class. These will help you understand how to analyze art.
