Introduction

FEMA has many programs designed to assist disaster victims. As we have learned, there are many types of disasters that affect people in many different ways. Different programs are equipped to handle different types of needs. Where a person is located in the disaster area and the size and scope of the disaster are just a couple of factors that determine what type of assistance disaster victims may require. If government fails to meet the needs of its citizens following a disaster, this could lead to public perception of government ineffectiveness. As we have learned in other units, the media also has an impact on public perception of government disaster relief efforts.

Instructions

You are an emergency planner for a county of 20,000 residents. A recent storm caused some power outages and other issues the county government was unprepared for. The county commission realizes if a bigger storm (such as a hurricane or tornado) strikes, the county may be unprepared and is seeking input from a variety of sources. You have been selected to conduct a presentation at the next meeting regarding FEMA aspects. Prepare a PowerPoint presentation that will guide you through your presentation.

In your PowerPoint presentation:

  • Compare the advantage of FEMA having many programs for recovery assistance as opposed to having just one basic plan.
  • Describe two effects of a disaster that may cause disaster victims to reach out for assistance.
  • Determine the two FEMA programs that would be used to assist the disaster victims identified.
  • Predict the role the media might play in determining the public perception of government effectiveness regarding disaster assistance efforts.

  • Resources and citations: Format according to current APA style and formatting guidelines.
