Week 2 DQs

In Chapter 3 we learned that some healthcare facilities under the guise of helping people have instead defrauded the US government out of billions of dollars each year. This past week a Miami man was sentenced to 20 years in prison and must pay back over $66 million dollars in restitution.

For this week’s discussion research a recent case related to healthcare fraud and answer the following questions:

  • 1) Where did the crime take place?
  • 2) What was the “scheme”?
  • 3) What was the motive?
  • 4) How was the perpetrator caught?
  • 5) Was there a prosecution?
  • 6) What was the punishment?
  • Based on the textbook and your research explain why healthcare fraud is so prevalent.
  • Discuss your thoughts on preventative measures to stop these facilities from defrauding the system in the future.
