The children who are born abroad to the services members in the United States and other employees will no longer have citizenship under a policy granted by the administration. The parents of the children will have to apply for citizenship for the children before they reach the age of eighteen. This policy will target the families who’s lived in the United States for years. The immigration agency stated, “the change will not affect the families who have at least one parent who is an American citizen, but will affect the families who do not have at least one parent as an American citizen for at least five years.”
The parents and the children will be impacted greatly on the decisions made by the public administration. It is unclear at this time how many families will impacted but it is my estimate that it will be a drastic amount. The change officially states that the parents will be required to apply for citizenship for their children in addition to the new law. If the person has resided in the United States at the time of the birth they is automatically granted citizenship. Government officials may be looking to remove the right to citizenship for the children who are born in the United States to undocumented immigrants. It has been previously announced that green cards would be denied to immigrants who are deemed very likely to be users of welfare.
“This policy update does not affect anyone who is born a U.S. citizen, period,†said Mr. Cuccinelli, who has aggressively pushed hard-line immigration policies backed by Mr. Trump and Stephen Miller, a White House adviser. “This only affects children who were born outside the United States and were not U.S. citizens.â€
Officials stated that children of the military members who are affected would still have an opportunity to apply for citizenship. The updates of the policy do not deny citizenship to the children of the United States government employees as well as military children born abroad. Andy Blevins, the executive director of the Modern Military Association of America, a nonprofit organization representing the military and veteran families, said the change would add to the toll of the armed forces. Military members already have a lot of things to deal with and the least thing the military should have to deal with when stationed overseas is trying to ensure that their children are United States citizens. Many people do not agree with the changes that the public administrators are trying to make because it would do more harm than good. The changes that the administrators are trying to make will destroy families and cause certain situations to become dysfunctional. Many families are built on a two parent household, so it would be a major change if one of the parents was not around to fully provide the financial stability that the family is use to having.
The alert, titled “Defining Residence in Statutory Provisions related to Citizenship, ” outlines several interpretations of the longstanding immigration laws regarding eligibility for naturalization and green card status, primarily affecting the children of the United States citizens who have never resided in the country. The Act also exclude some children born abroad in the United States military hospitals from the rights of citizenship echoes the other attempts of administration to curb the flow of immigration to the United States by all avenues including the avenues that are historically eligible for citizenship.
